Plot summary:
"MUTO awaken and wreck havoc in Japan in 1999. The Brody family loses Sandra in the incident, but the whole monster influence is covered by the scientists. Years later, Ford has a family, but Joe is still shaky about his wife's death. After years of ignoring him, Ford finally decides to help out his father after a failed attempt to have him stop. The two trespass the site of the destruction, but are caught by the authorities. Unfortunately, the scientists and the Brody family get caught in a hatching of a male MUTO. (The egg was kept for years and awakened just now) Joe dies and Ford is guilty for not believing him. The scientists ask him about the information that Joe had kept on the MUTO during the years of his research on the first incident. His information is very clear and the military comes to try to stop the monster. Ford joins the military to fight and warn his family to leave the town due to being so close to the MUTO threats. Apparently, the MUTO feeds off of radiation and can fire EMPS making their traces difficult to track.
Dr. Daisuke (main scientist) predicts the coming of Gojira, who appeared in 1954 during the fallout of Hiroshima. He believes the monster is actually the force of nature, attempting to punish the ones who break it's balance: The Great Equalizer. He ends up being right and the MUTO engages battle in with the monster. Unfortunately, he is no match and ends up fleeing. However, it is revealed that the MUTO is actually calling out for the female who had caused the incident in 1999, and soon the second MUTO awakens to reproduce. Godzilla follows their traces and the military is stressed knowing that they have 3 monsters to deal with. The general introduces a plan to make a megaton bomb destroy all three monsters when they meet in San Francisco: where the MUTO are headed to mate. Daisuke tells them to call off the plan, believing that Gojira is on their side and that they shouldn't interfere with nature, however, the military feels indifferent about this ignoring his pleas. Ford works with the military to arm the bomb, but most of his group are killed by the MUTO who had come to get the bomb as food for her unborn children. Ford survives and groups up to reactivate the bomb.
In San Francisco, the MUTO finally meet and place the eggs and the bomb in the center of the city. Later, the MUTO and Godzilla meet again. The military, who tries to evacuate the civilians are unable to help them due to the monster interference, and most hide off in shelters. Ford's family is seperated, as their child is moved away from the city on a bus and his wife being in a shelter. The resulting fight annihilates San Francisco and the city is covered in flames. However, Godzilla is outmatched due to the male and female teaming up. Ford finally finds the bomb and the with his group. The group carries off the bomb and Ford destroys the eggs. The mother notices and attempts to kill Ford, however is intercepted when Godzilla fires the atomic breath right at the female. Ford retreats and helps get the bomb to a far away ship. Godzilla kills the male MUTO as the female is more focused on getting back at the humans. The bomb is armed, but the group is killed by the Female MUTO who stares down at Ford in anger. A tired Godzilla uses the last of his strength to paralyze the female and Ford is rescued by the other soldiers right before the bomb detonates.
Ford is reunited with his family, and the scientists go to see Godzilla's body, which is completely still at the moment. In a surprising moment, Godzilla awakes and walks off in the ocean, with people announcing: "The King of Monsters is our savior?" on a screen.
Review:What a blast! This movie was alot of fun, and the audience in the theater really helped make the movie feel more special. I have kept up with the produciton of this movie for 2 years and from what I saw in the notes, the director really knew what Godzilla was. He was definently sure to make a movie where Godzilla does what he does best: Fight monsters and be an tank. In the movie, he expresses this so well. He's not indestructible, but he is the last guy standing at the end of the brawl. The monster's presence boils the blood of the monster's fans, and is surely going to impress those who are being introduced to the monster.
Lets not forget the MUTO; (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) who destroys and excites the fans just like any monster in a monster movie. They're roles in the movie are always very grand. Instead of being a single monster, there are two which spend the whole movie trying to repopulate their species while preventing humans from stopping them. Their existance in the outer world threatens humanity and brings forth Godzilla to get rid of the abominations.
And now the humans!..... they're not very good. The main characters serve very little purpose, despite being main characters. Some are cliche and most are bland. They don't give us laughs, sympathy (except for Joe Brody who dies so early on), or a reason to care from them. The only important thing that is even done by the humans is Ford destroying the MUTO eggs. Ford gets alot of focus but serves little to no part in the military's plots. In fact, the military's plans don't even do anything in the end. Dr. Daisuke (Love that reference) loses his purpose the moment everyone realizes that Joe had already figured out the MUTOs. The director promised a compelling human drama and while it is there, it's not very important overall because the humans are spoiling the time that we really wished to see: Godzilla and MUTO duking it out.
About that... my compliments about the monster battles are only at the end. The first time the MUTO fight is cut off (in a pretty funny scene) where MUTO realizes he can't do jack against Godzilla and runs off. The second fight is cut off when the male MUTO tries to fend off the monster and doors close ending the possibly amazing battle. Now the final part of the battle is amazing, and the definitive strong point of the movie. We all clapped when Godzilla wrecked the male MUTO and when he first fires the Atomic Breath. But it makes the other acts very shaky in development.
