Edit: Ok this article was never mentioned to be downgrading on the shooting incident, and I admit this is too harsh of a tone overall. Read the rest of the topic for my... uh amends? The entire point is of the post and any others that are incredibly overexaggerated with my stressful tone is not so much "this is fact" but more of getting people to explain their own issues or arguements involving the issue. Now you may continue to read what may be the most least polished things I've ever written. I usually make my posts really darn long so I'll cut it down this time. I'm sure you guys have heard of that ebola virus that's been going around... if you don't, it's probably because you're from America or you just don't check the news. The virus is... deadly and I'm not going to get into the more depressing details of the thing because that's not the main point here. In America our news channel is putting this thing aside for something apparently more important! http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/18965-black-cop-kills-unarmed-white-youth-media-and-feds-silent This is terrible, I agree but let me get something straight here. If my days of watching South Park and the Zimmerman incident is correct, this would never be as big as a fuss if their ethnicity weren't involved. In fact I've seen tons of these stories when they're both a similar race but if ___ people are involved then the crowd goes wild! We have a virus that has the mortality rate of 90%. 90%! and this shooting incident is the thing that's all over American news for the past few days! It's not only in Africa either. It's actually in Florida too. I wonder what this means? (sarcasm) A little extra: Spoiler: click to toggle I hope this doesn't end up as the Planet of the Apes. Edited by Aura, Aug 25 2014, 05:46 AM.

Are you serious? " if you don't, it's probably because you're from America" The amount of ignorance... loool. The Ebola virus is not something that's a major threat to America. The major concern is the virus that is killing people in underdeveloped countries. And to a degree, yes, we should be putting more attention on them. Not us. This whole "only caring about America" POV is total bs. The Ebola virus is not a concern. All this, and more, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-24RP_-X-U Second, you do realize we are allowed to focus on multiple serious issues going on at once? Why the hell should we focus reporting the news on only one crisis? How do you get to decide how one issue is more important than another? Third. Third. THIRD. If you're basing your opinion on South Park, you need to stop. That is a cartoon. Fiction. Aka not reality. Furthermore, it satires current events. Chances are you misinterpreted the actual message. Fourth, your whole "race being the main reason why it's only mentioned" thing? Well duh. If you think racism and discrimination are nonexistent in America, you are in for a rude awakening. That's why the shooting made national headlines. Instead of taking things at face value, find out why they are making national headlines. Do your research and maybe you won't come off as a bigot. |

Why do the ebola virus get such little coverage? Because there IS no coverage for it. There's so little known about it that to panic now is... well, a bit too premature. Why does a black man shooting a white kid get so much coverage? Because there is an entire HISTORY of racism and discrimination in America that depressingly still hasn't been resolved. Food for thought. |

I admit my overly harsh tone in this article and my lack of knowledge at some points. I never said that America only cared about themselves I just got irritated that the headlines were just full of the shooting which I still think is a very tragic incident and considering our history I know it's seriousness. The South Park comment is just a stretch. I never meant for it to be evidence at all just a joke. (Although I think some people need to understand that it's a satirical show that focuses on these problems) Also I never said it had to only be focused on the ebola virus. It just feels like it's less emphasized than the "other incident". In fact the thing is everywhere. It's calmed down a bit since but the thing is still causing riots. I'm perfectly aware of the racial history of our country but I wish that racism wasn't so prevalent. It's truly a terrible thing. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/12/america-racism-subtle-dangerous-new-york Again the cop shooting that man is a very bad thing and the guy deserves to be punished for it. I mean he was shot 6 times? Jesus. These two issues are something that are terrible. I really want to know more about both but the news is force feeding us only with that topic. Maybe the ebola will never come here, maybe, but it's still something that is incredibly deadly and terrifying. Every article I've seen has dumbed down the seriousness of the issue and while it may not concern a country that doesn't have too much of it, I'm sure it's something that we all need to know about. The area where the disease started is not the most healthy place admittingly but this should be tied with all the health problems involving Africa, which is also a big problem in the world that is lacking in solutions. It doesn't help when this thing is uncurable unlike malaria (which is also a problem to the world). I apologize if I came out as too harsh or ignorant, I only wanted to state a small erk and I thank you guys for commenting a few things I might have overlooked. I'm not exactly a very wise person with the best knowledge on national problems so I expect some... arguments to come out of it. "Why does a black man shooting a white kid get so much coverage?" Also Starf I think you got the races mixed around :\ |

Overexposure is the exact thing that is needed for the situation involving Ferguson. It became a very widespread topic once social media spread it like crazy due to the news media not paying any attention to the events going on in Missouri. This type of news reporting has become increasingly apparent in the post-9/11 America. When issues that involve national attention, you best expect to see it in the news very frequently. Your post made it sound like you were trying to downplay the importance of the issue(and still are to an extent). Both issues are important. Saying one is more important than the other will make you sound either bigoted or Americentric. |

I think that I should have probably made it more clear that it's the overexposure to the incident that I wanted to address. Involving health the ebola is a big thing. Involving racial issues and obituaries (Although it's much more than just any obituary) is another. I'm not saying it should be ignored and have the ebola news spread all over the place like the latter. When my dad came home he was surprised to see that it was literally the only thing that was on for that day. I think a sort of balance with them would be something. There are several issues out there that I haven't mentioned that should also be more emphasized. (thats not how the news works so I'm really kind of pushing here :\ ) Most of my posts involving a problem I get stressed out on end up to be... well not well addressed as it should but the overall intention is to get everyone else to rebut with my opinion. I never intented to be one of those youtubers saying: "Hur Hur my opinion is fact and everyone is wrong" at all. (I'll put some edits on my main post to sort of put emphasis on my real opinions) |
