Does anybody here speak more than one language? Did you learn it recently or did you grow up learning both? If you learnt recently, what was the reason behind learning a new language? |

I know 4 languages. (still learning the fourth one...) English is medium of teaching in my school so I have been learning it for a long time. Kannada is my mother tongue and its my second language in my school so I have been learning it too for a long time. Hindi is my national language so I have been learning it as a third language. Finally I am learning japanese as a hobby. I am good at writing, reading and speaking in English and Kannada. I can speak Hindi and can even read/write in it to a certain extend. I can understand Japanese and speak to a certain extend. But where I live, knowing 4 languages is no big deal. People here can speak in 5-6 languages. |

^ ;_; Which brings thing to me- who only knows around 2 languages for sure and the next two are just hanging. English: is my second language but, I use it as my first and am quite fluent at it. Hindi/Urdu: Is my mother tongue but, I'm not SO good at it. I can speak it manageably well. Tamil: Is what the people around me speak. It is the native language of my State. So, I 'know' it a little bit but, I can never speak it nor undertand its more complicated form, etc. I know only basics Spanish: Only started learning it as a hobby Arabic: My complete fav! I wish to learn it well and be able to speak it one day. It's just a hobby for now, still learning. Edited by Master Snowy, Oct 25 2014, 05:43 PM.

Wow, some of you guys know a lot of languages. I know two. English is my native language, and I took Spanish from 8th to 12th grade, so I'm around an intermediate level with it. |

Wow Snowy - Arabic! I was born in Canada so my mother tongue is English. I picked up Cantonese and Mandarin when I was 4 or 5. I started learning French when I was 7 and gave up when I was 10. So I'm not that great at it I started learning Spanish when I was 8 and am still learning it to this day. I'd say I'm proficient at it ;P Plus, I know a little German |

I'm fluent in Dutch and English. Can understand (both written and spoken) German, and speak/write at a decent level myself. |

I know Farsi and English and a bit of French. Btw Snowy, Arabic is the hardest language in the world. I have had personal experience learning it and both of my parents speak it. It is ridiculously complex, with rules on rules on rules with exceptions on the exceptions on the exceptions of rules. You have crazy things like 20 different tenses (That's right you have multiple past tense and future tense). Learn Farsi. It's easier, looks the same, and sounds the same. The grammer isn't messed up as much xD. |

I really wish I could be proficient at a different language. Not to be a bummer, but I still have yet to really find another language aside from English. I've been studying Korean for almost all my life now, yet I can't speak it. Spanish wasn't a good pick either as I did terrible on a class that should have been easy. (Spanish 1) |

That sucks Aura :/ I know how it feels, I tried to pick up Japanese a while ago but gave up because of the new symbols I'd have to learn. Guess we'll have to resort to google translate! |

Woah, people here know so many languages. FOr those that speak three, did you find that already being bilingual made it easier to learnt he third language or not? I've heard that people who can speak more than one language find it easier to learn new ones |

Well knowing two languages helps a lot in learning the third language. It was even more easier for me to learn hindi as pretty much all the alphabets in hindi are pronounced the same as they are in kannada. Just writing and speaking is completely different. |

So if you were to learn a language completely different to what you know, (say portuguese or italian for example) do you think it would be harder? |

Well in such a case, the diffculty is reduced slightly as you get used to the new language more easily as you already know a few languages. |
