Ok, last part of my recording information series of topics. A while ago we were talking about Power Trick and kroateon mentioned it didnt appear to be working correctly, which I agreed with. So I did check and it seems like it's working correctly. Power Trick does provide the pokemon with a far higher attack stat then with a pokemon with whats considered an already high stat. And the proportion seems right too. With this data I realised someone smarter then me could also work out the damage formula. A Shuckle Power Trick at level 110 has an attack stat of 506. Compared to a high attacking pokemon (I used Tyranitar with attack 296) with a move of the same base power, Power Trick does make a significant difference and doesnt look like it's bugged. The problem kroateon and I may have noticed was because Shuckle has a limited moveset and the moves they do have are fairly weak. Couple that with the lack of stat boosting moves and Shuckle would be in one of the top tiers but not the overpoweredness I was hoping to find. Moving on to the actual data, here are notes from the test: The two attacking Pokemon used were Shuckle (with Power Trick) and Tyranitar. The defending Pokemon was Drowzee. Both pokemon used moves that had a base power of 60 and received a STAB and Super Effective boost. I've done everything so the only variables are the Attack and Defense stats and the Drowzee levels. Shuckle - Level 110, Attack 506, Move Bug Bite Tyranitar - Level 110, Attack 295, Move Bite The Drowzee were between levels 15-30. 1) There is no variation in the damage dealt. Unlike the main games, a level 15 Drowzee will always have a 14 Defense stat and will always be dealt 2754 damage by an unboosted Tyranitar using Bite. 2) The damage dealt was almost linear but that "almost" part wasn't my stumbling block. Two different problems occurred that stopped me from being able to work out the damage formula. The pairs of Level 19/20 and 29/30 have the same defense stat and yet the damage they received is different. At the same time the pairs of Level 25/26 for Shuckle and 20/21 for Tyranitar had different defense stats but the same damage. I know how to manipulate, derive, interpret and use moderate algebra but I've never been good at creating the formulas. Those two problems lead me to believe level has some effect on damage but without having 2 Drowzees of the same level with different Defense stats, I cant do it. But the info is here if anyone ever wants to work it out. Someone might find it interesting.

Interesting, but is it because of type advantage Shuckle does more damage ?

Shouldn't be, because both Bug and Dark are super effective against Psychic. And Shuckle and Tyranitar both got STAB from their moves. So the damage should be lower but in the same ratio had both of them used Tackle instead.

Randomness

I'm not the smartest guy around and I have about 10 years of math knowledge (I believe I started math when i was 5? Preschool doesn't count) I'd like to try work something out. It's quite interesting. Did Shuckle use some sort of def boosting move that ending up adding to its attack stat? Or is it just base 230 |

I've got your answer. The formula is as follows: Damage = Damage Stat * Base Power / Defensive Stat * Effectiveness Multiplier * (random value between .96 and 1.04) The reason why the higher leveled Pokemon took less damage was the damage variance. Ordinarily, the damages will be within about 6 points of each other, but since you are working with such high numbers, you get larger variances. The reason there was no variance when you repeatedly tested against the same number is because of how RNGs work. While the numbers appear random, they actually produce specific strings of numbers. Let's call them A, B, C, etc. I am unsure exactly how Pokemon randomizes the strings. However, the game always starts on string A, and it will use the next number in the string to randomize a move's damage. Let's say that when the Lv 19 Drowzee comes out, the game switches to string B, and when the Lv 20 Drowzee comes out, it switches to string C. The game will then take the first number from these strings to randomize a move's damage. In other words, if from turning on the game to turning it off, you perform the exact same actions, you will produce the exact same results, especially with a program like Pokemon Showdown, which does not have a clock that it can use to randomize damage. Note that switching isn't the only thing that will change the random number string. This is why damage is more varied in a real game, because you won't be repeating the same actions. Additionally, many games and programs use the clock to help randomize the starting string (and which strings will be switched to) so the game doesn't begin in the same way every time. Nice, thanks. Thats pretty simple then. In my mind I was thinking some kind of log or polynomial or whatever kind of strange relationship. This is why I dont do maths
